Known Issues
Known Issues refer to reported software problems that are yet to be resolved. This page will be updated as issues get resolved.
Content
Tool: Viewing as Learner
Issue: When switching to the learner view for a content item with scheduled start dates or is hidden, an error code appears instead of the content being totally hidden.
Workaround: Because the instructor has an overarching role, the system detects and still shows that there is content. However, rest assured that if the content is hidden or set to show at a later date, actual students will not see it. For a better learner view, please consider enrolling someone into the role of participant to test this out.
Tool: Checklist
Issue: When using the Checklist feature to create a list, students are only able to see the list items and not the main description section. This issue occurs in both the student view and the learner view for instructors.
Workaround: You can add a checklist to your content by linking it as a "WebLink." In the course admin tool, copy the link to the checklist item. Then, in Content, select the option to "create new" and paste the link as a WebLink. The steps for this process are illustrated in this video. Alternatively, you can create a checklist without including any content in the category description field or in the description field for the checklist itself.
Tool: View Reports (Content)
Issue: There seems to be an issue with the search bar under 'users' for the SCORM section in the content tool when trying to access reports. Search field results appear inconsistent.
Workaround: This field may be case-sensitive, consider starting the search word with a capital letter. Typically, search fields are not case-sensitive, but this one may be an exception (D2L is working on resolving this issue).
Tool: SCORM/ xAPI Package & Grades Tool
Issue: SCORM files can be integrated with Brightspace’s Grades tool. However, the Grades tool might not recognize and give grades when a student completes all content types.
Workaround: To ensure that grades are automatically updated when a student finishes a SCORM file, instructors are recommended to use a quiz block or component when creating the SCORM file, even if it only contains one question. It is also crucial to establish the criteria for quiz completion and tracking. It has been noted that without a quiz component, Brightspace may not detect the grades in the Grades tool.
Tool: Manage Files/ Content
Issue: When naming files in the Manage Files tool, the following characters are not allowed and are known to cause issues when used in other tools: \ / : * ? " < > | ~ # % & + { } -
However, Brightspace only displays a notification for some of these characters, not all of them. See the image below. This might cause an issue when adding files from course files to content.
Workaround: Please ensure that your file name does not contain any of the characters mentioned above and is set to a reasonable character limit.
Communication
Tool: Groups
Issue: Users are limited to creating a maximum of 200 groups per course, except for the Single-user, member-specific group type.
Workaround: While we are actively asking D2L to fix this, please consider creating two group categories with the same set-up: one for up to 200 groups and the other for the rest of the groups. It would be helpful to let students know that they have to enroll in just one of the categories.
Tool: Groups (Quick Link to Self-Enrollment Groups)
Issue: The "Insert Quicklink" feature, when used in areas such as content or announcements to link to self-enrollment group categories, is displaying broken links for students. This occurs when students who are not yet enrolled in the group category click on the link.
Workaround: The WTS team is currently working on a fix. In the meantime, please advise students to access groups directly with the Groups tool.
Assessment
Tool: Self Assessment
Issue: When students access a Self Assessment tool item, they notice that the title or name is displayed twice in addition to the tool name, resulting in three separate headers for one page.
Workaround: N/A (D2L is aware of this issue; however, there is currently no estimated timeline for when it will be fixed).
Tool: New Quiz Experience: Grading as the Teaching Assistant Role
Issue: Teaching Assistants cannot view questions while grading quizzes in the New Quiz Experience.
Workaround: While we work to resolve this issue, those in the TA role should disable the New Quiz Experience and use the Classic Experience when grading quizzes.
Tool: Assignments
Issue: When viewing assignments with past due dates in preview mode, the assignment instructions do not appear, resulting in a blank screen as if there were no instructions.
Workaround: N/A (D2L is working on resolving this issue).
Tool: Assignments
Issue: Group assignments do not appear in preview mode for anyone, regardless of their role.
Workaround: Use the link in the right-hand column instead.
Tool: Quizzes
Issue: The setting to prevent users from going back to previous pages in quizzes is not functioning properly. When the checkbox for "Prevent going back to previous page" under Timing and Display in the quiz settings is selected, these settings do not take effect during the quiz preview. Additionally, after exiting preview mode, the settings automatically revert to their original state.
Workaround: N/A (D2L is working on resolving this issue).
Tool: Grades
Issue: When attempting to export grades by filtering for sections only; the resulting CSV or Excel file appears empty. This issue affects all courses that include sections.
Workaround: N/A (D2L is working on resolving this issue).
Other Tools
Tool: Intelligent Agent
Issue: An error code appears when trying to BCC/CC all students in the address book. This happens when more than the allowed 500 characters are in the To/Cc/Bcc fields.
Workaround: N/A (D2L is working on resolving this issue).
Tool: Safari browser & Gradescope
Issue: By default, Safari blocks cross-site tracking, which prevents adding Gradescope assignments.
Workaround: This setting can be disabled in the browser's Privacy settings, accessible through Safari > Settings or by using the key combination "CMD+,".
