Roles and Permissions
Every user in a course is assigned a specific role that determines their access permissions for the course in OWL Brightspace. The various user roles are detailed below. When adding users, please consider the required level of access and select the appropriate role for each individual.

Roles | Description |
Instructor
Purpose: Assigned to the official instructors of the course via Student Center |
The instructor role is assigned to people who are responsible for teaching a course. People in this role are listed as the approved instructor of the course. People in this role will be visible in Classlist. Enrolment in this role is done through official class registrations in Student Center. |
Learner
Purpose: Assigned to students who are registered in the course via Student Center |
The Learner role is assigned to students who participate in a course and are graded. Students in this role are officially registered in the course. Learners can view course content, participate in activities, and access their grades (if made visible by the instructor). People in this role will be visible in Classlist. Enrolment in this role is done through official class registrations in Student Center. |
Course Admin
|
The Course Admin role is assigned to individuals who set up a course or assist with managing it. Those in this role are typically administrators within their department or coordinators for the course. Course Admins have the same abilities as the Instructor role. They can create and modify course content and activities, carry out all grading functions, and add individuals to the course. |
Facilitator
Purpose: Assigned to course coordinators and other course admins who are not the official instructors of the course |
The Facilitator role is assigned to people who maintain the course, like the Instructor role, but who are not the official instructor of the course. People assigned to this role are listed in the Classlist and manually added by the course instructor or facilitator. |
Teaching Assistant
Purpose: Assigned by instructors to teaching assistants who primarily assess and interact with students in particular course sections |
The Teaching Assistant role is assigned to people who assist instructors with grading and interacting with students, but who do not contribute to the development of the course content. Teaching Assistants can grade activities and interact with Learners. This role cannot create or edit course content or activities; if the person needs to help construct the course, use the Facilitator role instead. People in this role will be visible in Classlist. They are manually added by the Instructor, Course Admin, or Facilitator roles. This role needs to be added to each course section that they will need access to interact with. |
Participant
Purpose: Assigned to students who are not registered in the course officially |
The Participant role is assigned to people who are not officially enrolled in the course, but who want to be able to participate in the course and be graded. Grades for people in this role cannot be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. |
Read Only
Purpose: Assigned to people who are guests, content reviewers, or accreditors. |
The Read Only role is assigned to people who want to view the content of the course without participating in activities or being graded. The Read Only role does not have access to learners’ submissions or grades. |
